Holter Monitor (Ambulatory ECG)

What it is

A Holter Monitor is a portable ECG recorder worn for 24–48 hours (or longer if clinically required). It provides a continuous record of the heart’s electrical activity during normal daily activities and sleep.

Why it’s recommended

A Holter Monitor is used when symptoms are intermittent or were not captured on a standard ECG. It is helpful for evaluating palpitations, fainting episodes, irregular heart rhythms, or monitoring the effectiveness of treatment.

What to expect

Electrodes are attached to the chest and connected to a small recorder worn on a belt or shoulder strap. Patients may be asked to keep a brief symptom diary. Showering and swimming should be avoided during the monitoring period. After returning the device, the recording is analysed and reviewed by the cardiologist.
